After finding out that my APO E status was 2/3, I was doing some research and ran across this book. The author has some valid points about eating a whole food diet, avoiding eating things from fryers in restaurants, etc. But, unfortunately, mostly she dishes out the same general advice that you can get anywhere. She did not reference any studies at all. It was all just "take my word for it" advice. Personally, by trial and error, I have found that very low carb and high fat works best for me (i.e., a ketogenic diet). The author, however, preaches the same tired anti-saturated fat message. She gives canola oil and other vegetable oils that I would not touch a green light, as well as soy. I am a voracious reader and feel like the author should read some the books I''ve read, such as Good Calorie, Bad Calorie, Big Fat Surprise, Why We Get Fat and What to do About it, and Keto Clarity to name a few. I found most of the APO E information online without needing to plow through this tome of tired diet and exercise advice that we all know already. Nothing really new here. In fact, after I had already bought it and read much of it, my Naturopathic Doctor mentioned it and said I should "skip it." Wish I''d have known that before spending the money!

If you are a beginner learning about the benefits of exercise and eating a whole food diet, as well as the benefits of lowering your stress levels and sleeping good, then this is the book for you. The book goes into great detail on basic wellness and it accounts for a large portion of the information. The genetic information and the specific diet for your genes— you’ll find several chapters in. If you’ve done 23 and me – you’ll be able to search the genome export to find your Apo E variants and then follow the diet and exercise recommendations for your combo. Valuable info but I expected more on genetics, since that is the title of the book. The non-genetic info is valuable, but for anyone already versed in wellness (whole organic foods, exercise, sleep, water, stress-management, etc....) you’ll be skimming and skipping most of the book.

It''s likely your health insurance won''t pay for the gene testing, mine didn''t. I couldn''t afford the test. Even if you can afford the test, the recipes and diet are not possible if you live in a rural area without constant, steady access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and I''m not talking about apples, but avocados and cilantro. I have to drive 1.5 hours to a store, so the diet was not possible for me. It also seemed a very meager diet for someone like me who does heavy labor for a living. This diet is perfect for a Californian or Oregonian or Seattle dweller, not so much anyone in the wilderness. And no, I never eat fast food, I rarely eat meat, I have an already extremely strict diet, and this diet was too rarified for me.

I have always strived to keep a balance of all three food groups even though I was told, due to my heart condition, that I needed to cut out all fats. In this book Pamela McDonald gives an excellent rational as to why that is not good. This book has been helpful in providing me a path to better health.

Having developed a new interest in methods to remove inflammation and balance my body better became my goal after my diagnosis with MDS in April 2012. I began researching treatments, cures and total education about blood, body and how it makes blood cells. I spent time going to Stanford, 2 Mayo Clinics, Oregon health & science speaking with some of the most respected doctors in this field. I felt that there was no true solution for my dilemma except for a stem cell transplant. I decided to seek every avenue for supportive and alternative treatments. In my spiritual search I found Wayne Dyer and his meditation methods very helpful in teaching how to get to places I had never been before. There is a very strong collective consciousness that people like Rayna, Wayne and Pam (minds) flow in and somehow I was able to tap in and was very comfortable in the direction I needed to go in. My mother had Alzheimer''s and father had heart disease, I decided with my family history and my current imbalance I needed to find out my apo-e type. Rayna suggested I get Pam''s book, new or used and that I would be pleased with what I would learn and the direction it would take me. As I read the book I decided to try to find Pam and meet in person. As it turned out her office was within 30 minutes of me. We barely got started with the first appointment and I realized there was so much important information I needed to learn. The balance of the body consists of what we eat, what we think, exercise quantity and quality and stress levels. Writing intentions and the power that they hold is a very strong tool I am learning to utilize. I am spiritual in thinking and believe there is a divine power that flows in everything in the universe. Learning my apo-e type of 4-3 was informative in that I do not clear certain foods or metabolize very slowly. On August 8th I stopped eating, meat, dairy, gluten containing foods and alcohol. I thought it would be difficult to follow such a strict diet however the foods once we learned how to prepare tasted better and that my previous out of balance diet was harming me. I immediately noticed my digestion was better, I never woke up in the middle of night with indigestion and my stomach felt perfect in the morning. I started to drink 1 tsp of turmeric pwd with water first thing in the morning which is anti-inflammatory. Within weeks not only did I feel better I started to notice some of my blood work was improving. It has been steadily improving as Pam says it takes a very long time for the body and marrow to recover. Platelet counts have shown good improvement. I would consider the balance of protein, fat and carbohydrates not to mention the quality and preparation and how often you eat to be one of the most important factors that everyone needs to learn for their apo-e type. Where I thought I was getting plenty of protein or fat I really was not. I feel much clearer in thoughts with this new balanced diet. Pam is one of the most powerful people I have ever met and her ways of thinking set a goal and standard that if we all followed, the world would be a healthier place.

I''m a 53 year old man who lost 100 lbs of excess flab after being very overweight since being a child. To my knowledge I''m currently fit and healthy and I''m interested in taking my wellbeing to the next level. Wayne W Dyer highly recommends this diet and I thought I''d explore it. The book makes sense and explains superbly the diets and exercises needed for the various Apo E genotypes. It''s also packed with great information and insights. ... BRILLIANT!!! That''s what makes this is a 5 star book. To follow the recommendations you need to know your Apo E genotype, fair enough. To have the Apo E Gene and advanced cholesterol testing, which you need to do so you can follow the diet, will cost you a minimum of $695 (at the time of writing this review). You don''t believe me? Take a look at the testing options on her web site which is the same name as the book. Granted you get other things in the package that are most helpful. I just felt very disappointed the tests cost so much, it would have been good to have an affordable option just for the testing alone. In my opinion, if you''re buying the book so you can follow the diet there''s not much point in reading it unless you know which type you are. If you know your Apo E genotype then this is a brilliant book. If you''re a health professional researching diets I guess this would be a good read too. If you are health conscious it is a great read and will help you make an informed decision if you''d like to go down this route or not.

Having just found out I had the dreaded apo E 3/4 gene I eagerly bought this book to help me manage the lifestyle but overall am disappointed with the book. I give my positives and constructive criticisms: Positives: - has a stab at dealing with a very important topic. Nothing much else out there on the subject. - great that it is written by a fellow E3/4 carrier rather than a smug 2/2 - she really wants to help people and I am sure she is a good and caring doctor - comments on whole foods and micronutrients are all very sensible - I like the way she takes a broad view of health markers and life factors rather than managing particular test numbers (as most doctors do) Constructive criticisms: - for all the promise, the resultant diets are all very similar for the different apoEs with tiny % shifts in macronutrients. Basically low fat whole-food whilst staying on moderate side of the low fat jihardists. - her analysis of the fats is a bit superficial, casually dismissing the saturated fats as inflamitory. Loads of research would argue differently. - apoE 4 is known as the "Alzheimer''s gene". Yet the only lens she looks at health through is lipids - cholesterol quantity and quality. Yet our brains are the ultimate fatty organs which need copious fat to function optimally. Restricting fat just does not seem credible when Alzheimer''s is increasingly called "diabetes type 3" - surely we need to control insulin resistance by curbing carbs/sugars. - the book is devoid of science justifying her assertions. No technical chapters or reviews of scientific studies. Instead there are endless chapters of fluffy padding - how to do basic exercises, meal plans, progress check lists, case studies. By background, I spent years on a low fat whole food diet as recommended for my genotype. My total cholesterol was ok, but my HDL was low and my trigs were high. I had fatty liver disease and gout. The chronic underuse of my gaul bladder caused gall stones. Six months ago I started trying a high fat, low carb diet including lots of egg yolks, butter, MCT oil and grass fed meat. Also tonns of vegetables. Dropping the carbs and slashing the fuit cured my gout and fatty liver. My total cholesterol is exactly the same but my "good" cholesterol has bounced up and my harmful trigs have fallen. My ApoB profile is also very good. Equally my father (who also has the gene) is now suffering terribly from Alzheimer''s. For apoE 4s. Clearly we have to carefully monitor our CAD risk and adjust our diets if lipid/inflamation markers are out of line, but seeing at first had the pain and distress that Alzheimer''s causes I would be very loath to slash fats (including great saturated fats like grass fed butter and coconut) which are brain supportive. In short I am willing to change my lifestyle to give a more supportive environment for my genotype but this book did not give me enough reasoned argument and scientifically based information to do this.
